Children At Risk Distance Learning (CARDL)

CARDL is a flexible and comprehensive distance learning program for training people to work with children who have experienced trauma from crisis experiences. These include orphans, child prostitutes, child soldiers, street children, children in institutional care, and children of abuse, with HIV/AIDS or disabilities.

Many churches and organizations have a heart and passion to serve these children at risk, but they can struggle to come to terms with the large and growing number of children, the complexities of their problems, and an ability to provide best care practice.

Training seminars are one solution to the problem, but may not always be available or relevant. Also many people, for a variety of reasons, cannot leave their families, volunteer positions or employment. Others cannot afford significant costs.

Over the last twenty years Janette has received many requests for distance learning. Using her vast experience as an international orphan care trainer and consultant, she has designed CARDL as a response to these requests.

The first to complete CARDL is a group in Rwanda, Africa. As in this instance, the CARDL is an especially valuable experience for those considering working or volunteering with vulnerable children in orphanages in the developing world.

CARDL draws on a biblical foundation, but also psychology, social work, anthropology and management. The number of lessons, the time frame, and the topics is flexible and can be adapted to individual and organizational needs.

Using the Care for Orphans and Vulnerable Children module, plus other material, weekly lessons and easy to follow assignments are sent out via the internet (or post if not available) and are marked and returned.

Small groups of 4-6 trainees working individually on their lessons and assignments, but also meeting together a few times during the program, can greatly benefit from support and 'brain storming.'

Topics could include child abuse, attachment, loss and grief, play, models of care (foster care, small group homes, institutions), Convention on the Rights of the Child, trauma, street children, counselling and caring for the caregiver.

Janette is excited to be able to offer the Children At Risk Distance Learning program.

Please contact her if you would like to discuss your personal, professional or organizational training needs through this unique program.
